How To Make Mahogany Cake

From Dainties by Sarah Tyson Rorer, 1912. Section 24 of 67.

1 1/2 cupfuls of sugar

1/2 cupful of butter

1/2 cupful of water

2 cupfuls of flour

3 eggs

3 level teaspoonfuls of baking powder

2 ounces of grated chocolate

1 teaspoonful of vanilla

Cream the butter, add the sugar, and when light, add the eggs, thoroughly beaten, without separating. Put the milk in a saucepan and add the chocolate; stir until the chocolate is thoroughly cooked, and stand aside to cool; when cool, add it to the cake mixture. Add the vanilla and the flour and baking powder sifted together. Bake in a hollow tubed pan. When cold, ice with cold chocolate icing

Stir four level tablespoonfuls of grated chocolate into the white of one egg, mix until smooth, and then add gradually one cupful of powdered sugar; add a teaspoonful of vanilla, and beat for ten minutes.
