Dainties

by Sarah Tyson Rorer · 1912 · Arnold And Company

Shelf note

Dainties is Rorer’s party book: cocktails in the old sense (an appetizer of oysters, fruit or vegetables, not a mixed drink), punches and frappés, small cakes, creamed and stuffed candies, frozen puddings and ice-cream sauces. The archived copy is the 1912 edition of a book first printed in 1904.

All of it survives here. Look for the Lady Baltimore cake, which had become famous only a few years earlier.

Questions about this book

Why does Dainties have cocktails in a temperance-era book?

Rorer uses “cocktail” the way menus of her day did, for a chilled appetizer: oysters, fruit or vegetables in a sharp sauce. The punches and frappés are mostly fruit drinks.

Which edition is this?

The 1912 edition published by Arnold and Company. The copyright notice also records an earlier 1904 copyright.

Is the full text here?

Yes, every section, from appetizers to the Venetian biscuits with whipped cream.
